Science & Symphony

Explore the Amazing Interplay between Music and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math! Students enjoy learning to think and explore across disciplines and mediums – useful skills to develop in our fast-changing world.

In this 4-day residency program, students engage in fun hands-on activities and experiments that reveal the deep connections between music and other disciplines, including physics, biology, anatomy, technology and math. Students will learn about the physics of sound and analyze sounds from the animal kingdom using Cornell University’s Raven recording and editing software. Instructors demonstrate and perform on a variety of instruments from the symphony orchestra. They will discover the anatomy and acoustics behind how animals hear and communicate in the natural world. Each participant will create their own banjo using simple materials provided plus an item from home. At the end of the workshop, students will not only have learned about the science behind music, but will also perform songs they compose on their hand-crafted banjos.

Two musician instructors from the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra will teach one class of 30-35 students for 2 hours a day, over the course of a 4-day residency. Recommended for 4th-5th grade classes.

Artist Background

Raleigh Symphony Orchestra has been Raleigh’s community orchestra since 1979, performing full orchestra and chamber music concerts throughout the area. Our orchestra members represent all walks of life, and many are local music educators who work with young students. We seek to foster interest in learning about music in young people, and encourage youth participation in music programs. Each year we hold a Rising Stars Concerto Competition, from which selected high school and college artists are chosen to perform in a concert as featured soloists with the orchestra.
