Books Alive

Books Alive

Nurture your students love of books and reading with Jennifer’s stories, songs, instruments and folk toys in this lively and participatory program. Jennifer brings books to life with bagpipe, fiddle, banjo, dancing puppet and handkerchief mouse. Some stories/books included are; The Gingerbread Man, The World According to Humphrey, Abi Yo Yo and The Tortoise and the Hare. Jennifer is happy to include a book of your choice given a month to prepare. This program meets language arts core standards through deepening listening skills and language appreciation. It also meets social emotional learning core standards through the values of kindness, acceptance of differences and creative problem solving explored in the stories. Students will sing, clap along and dance in their seats. “The song you created for our book was so much fun for our kids (and adults). One parent shared with me that their Kindergarten student was singing “Hum, Hum, Hum, Hum, Humphrey” at the top of their lungs all weekend. You definitely made a positive impression.” Andrea Sellers Literacy Specialist @ Hominy Valley School. For grades PreK-2 and 3-5.

Artist Background

I am a singer, storyteller, fiddler, piper and poet living in Asheville, NC. I believe in the power of music and story to create connection, equality and joy. I have made my living as a performer and teacher of traditional music, story and dance for fifty years and have sung with toddlers in church basements, been a featured teller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN, and given thousands of school assembly programs, concerts and workshops across the US, Canada and as far away as Hong Kong. I am delighted to be working with United Arts and look forward to bringing Books Alive to your school.
