The Evolution of A Cappella

The Evolution of A Cappella

An exciting and engaging overview of all-vocal music, this program urges students to compare and contrast characteristic sounds of early and current forms of a cappella as they have evolved throughout history. Students will hear all-vocal demonstrations of chant, madrigal-singing, classical choral music, a barbershop tag, doo-wop music and various contemporary pop selections. They will further become familiar with the historical and cultural context imperative to the development of each aforementioned a cappella style. Students will journey through the process of what it takes to become a “band without instruments” by learning to replicate basic improvisational techniques used to vocally imitate different instrument sounds, and by discovering and contributing to the creative process involved in creating an a cappella arrangement of a popular song. Vocabulary and musical concepts will be age-appropriate, and students will have the opportunity to interact with and ask questions to the performing artists! Dancing, clapping, and singing along to the music are always encouraged!
