Shakescenes is a combination residency and performance aimed at demystifying Shakespeare and his works. Our goal is to elevate students’ appreciation of Shakespeare by arming them with the tools to tackle the challenging language and provide them a chance to practice those language skills during performance. During the residency, students learn the social and historical context of Shakespeare’s world as well as tools and techniques for understanding his plays through exercises and open discussion. For the performance, four members of Burning Coal’s professional acting troupe conclude the week with an engaging, high-energy performance, available to the entire school. The performance gives students an opportunity to practice what they’ve learned during the week-long residency and reflect on their experience with Shakespeare.
