Kids Make Comics! Assembly

Kids Make Comics! Assembly

FOR GRADES 3-5. Every student succeeds in this lively 45-minute interactive cartooning program! The artist begins the program with a PowerPoint presentation that will introduce students to the art of telling stories in graphic form: comics and graphic novels. Students then participate through a drawing demonstration that teaches them how simple shapes are used to create super characters, and as “building blocks” to frame up the basic shape needed to draw more complex characters. The artist uses a large pad of paper on an easel, and students draw along with him step by step. The artist then leads them on an exciting writing exercise that uses his drawing as the catalyst for creating a story; proving to them that writing can be just as much fun as drawing! Students bring paper, pencil and their imaginations to this program and will leave with tons of ideas for creating their own characters and comic stories! LIMIT 200 students per program.

Artist Background

Dave McDonald’s cartooning and comics programs give students the tools they need to be successful at creating and drawing their own unique characters and writing original stories for them. His goal is to ensure that each student realizes that if they have an imagination, then they have the ability to successfully tell stories in graphic form. I teach that simple shapes make super characters using PERSONIFICATION, allowing even the most “reluctant artist” to succeed! HIs instructional videos are featured on the educational reading app, Epic! and Youtube channel Dave McDonald Art.
