An interactive performance that reveals the musical science behind over a dozen instruments made from found objects and repurposed materials. The audience will explore a wide range of instruments, including their vocal cords, body percussion, as well as Luke’s homemade wind, string, and percussion instruments. They will make hypotheses and put them to the test as they discover how volume, length, and tension work together to make different notes. They will learn that they don’t need expensive instruments to make music. You can start with a bottle or a can. Is it possible to make a song with just bottles? With the help of a looper, Luke creates a song on the spot using only bottles for harmony, melody, and percussion. They will hear the origin story of the cajón, an Afro-Peruvian box drum that is now being used all over the world.
Luke’s passion for music and creativity will inspire the students to explore their own passions while reminding them to take care of the environment. He reinforces the idea that everyone is uniquely creative, however, creativity must be developed and we shouldn’t let screens, devices, and video games rob us of the opportunity to develop our creativity.
Artist Background
Luke re-discovered his passion for music and the arts while volunteering at a Children’s home in Bolivia where he taught and performed music, wrote and directed plays, painted murals, and organized art workshops. Working within a tight budget, together with his passion for creativity, drove Luke to explore the sounds of found objects and to make his own instruments. In 2024, he released an album called, “Pepito & The Trash Cans”, 5 songs recorded with bottles, cans, found objects, and homemade instruments.
