Bharatanatyam & Kathak – dance movement to express and experience: Residency

Teaching two dance forms to children can greatly benefit their development in several ways. I stand in a unique position to take use of two types of music and dance forms to convey more effectively & interestingly. First, exposure to diverse dance styles fosters cultural appreciation and understanding from a young age. Second, learning different movement techniques enhances physical coordination, balance, and motor skills crucial for their age group. Moreover, dance promotes creativity, self-expression, and confidence, nurturing a positive attitude towards learning and collaboration. Overall, this multidimensional approach not only enriches their artistic experience but also supports holistic child development.

I will offer an engaging exploration in this residency of two distinct dance forms: Bharatanatyam and Kathak. Students will delve into the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam, focusing on its expressive hand gestures, rhythmic footwork, and storytelling elements rooted in South Indian tradition. They will also experience Kathak, characterized by its graceful spins, intricate footwork, and emotive storytelling typical of North Indian culture. They can present a small performance for the recorded music with some costumes, jewels, make up & dancing bells at the end of the residency if they would like to. This gives them a life time oppurtunity to experience the dance form little more deeper and a life time memory.

Through this residency, students will not only learn the technical aspects of each dance form but also gain insights into their cultural significance and historical contexts. The sessions will encourage creativity, self-expression, and teamwork, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts while promoting physical coordination and confidence. Overall, my residency will aim to inspire a love for dance and cultural diversity, enhancing the educational experience of participants in a fun and enriching way.

Artist Background

Seema Viswanath, is an Indian classical dancer who dances ‘Bharatanatyam’ and ‘Kathak’ from NC. Seema has been associated with dancing for 25+ years. She engages herself in creating new works with fellow dancers, musicians, visual artists, teaching, conducting workshops, choreographs in the community. For her dance is not just for entertainment but it’s a way of living. Before a kid talks, they learn to clap, dance, sing, draw and then talk. Every movement of nature is a dance to the rhythm cycle of sun. Our body dances to our heart beat every second. So art is inbuilt in everyone and it is expressed in different ways. She finds her way to experience this and teach community to realize it through her dance school Nritya MayaNanda.
