Join us LIVE on June 4 at 6:00 p.m. for a special Virtual First Friday event to close out the school year. United Arts Council’s Annual Writers Share will showcase student writers from Wake County Schools who participated in our Artists in Schools program. Together with their teaching artists, the students will read a piece of work that was created during their virtual writer residency.
When asked what the Writers Share means to her, writer Mimi Herman said:
“Once a year, the United Arts Council’s Writers Share transforms the lives of a group of extraordinary young writers. On this special evening each spring, these student writers learn that their talents are worthy of being nurtured and that their voices matter in the world.”
Parents tell us the Writer Residency is one of their children’s favorite weeks of the school year. One parent had this to say:
“I can’t possibly express to you how much [my daughter] loved that week of creative writing and how much enthusiasm she brought home each day to tell us what writing exercise she had done. The Writer-in-Residence program gives the students a new experience, allows them to try something that is outside the rigors of the standard educational requirements, and allows them to express themselves individually.”
The evening will begin with special remarks from Wake County Public School Board Member, Christine Kushner.
The Writers Share teaching artists include Mimi Herman, Diane Silcox Jarrett, Michael Beadle, Tony Peacock, Kelly Starling Lyons, and Regie Cabico.
You can watch the event on Facebook Live or Zoom. Closed captioning will be available.
