SUMMARY:Making Music at the NC Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Explore the intersection of art and music at NCMA in this experiential\, experimental exploration of ekphrasis!\nMaking Music at NCMA \nJoin us in person for a fun and interactive workshop at the North Carolina Museum of Art! Whether you’re an art lover\, music lover\, or just curious and creative\, this event lets you get hands-on in the galleries of the North Carolina Museum of Art. \nParticipants will explore the world of sound and rhythm up close and inspired by the museum’s incredible collection. Meet fellow enthusiasts\, try out instruments\, and collaborate in small groups to create short musical compositions that interpret and describe the art you’re seeing. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to make music and memories! \nYour hosts are Greg Whitt and Annelies Gentile\, professional teaching artists collaborating on a new body of work: EKPHRASTIC MUSIC. It’s an ancient Greek approach for interpreting visual art through other art forms. Traditionally it’s literary\, but we’re taking it in new directions to broaden the practice and foster the connection between art and music. \nYou don’t need to be a musician or an artist to join in\, just willing to stretch your creative boundaries a bit. Only twenty tickets are available due to limited space in the galleries. \nNOTE: This workshop will be photographed and filmed. Greg and Annelies will present this project at an arts-based symposium in New Mexico at the end of February. Your participation is an implied photo release\, and your enthusiam will support this exciting new experimental approach to arts integration. \nTicket holders meet at the entrance to NCMA’s West Building (the new\, modern one). Please arrive at least ten minutes before 2pm.

SUMMARY:Conversations Between Four Black Abolitionist Music-Makers
DESCRIPTION:United Strings of Color is presenting an immersive experience of Black history using music\, theatre\, and mixed media arts to educate about the lives\, countries\, times\, systemic laws\, and iconic contributions of the four Black abolitionists: Ignatius Sancho\, Joseph Bologne “Chevalier”\, Solomon Northrup and Frederick Douglass. Pre-show interactive immersive activities will take place in the lobby of the SECU Auditorium at the showtime listed\, with the theatrical production beginning one hour later. Throughout the production\, USC groups will play music either composed by the historical figures themselves\, associated with them in historical documentation\, or of the era in which they lived. Following the formal presentation\, the audience will be invited to converse with our musical Black abolitionists and engage further in the discoveries the production uncovers.

SUMMARY:Londs Reuter
DESCRIPTION:Join ADF for a FREE professional dance performance at NCMA! \nGOOD EFFORT by dancer and choreographer Londs Reuter is an evening-length performance of attunement\, calibration\, repetition\, trying\, and trying again. Choreographed in collaboration with local professional dancers Kaitlin Fox\, Kristin Clotfelter\, and Anna Maynard\, on-site at the North Carolina Museum of Art\, GOOD EFFORT asks its performers to be in relationship to effort and sense into what they need to stay together\, to lift their leg\, or to make it up a hill. For Reuter\, effort—whether high\, low\, or somewhere in between—is a compositional tool and design technique\, empowering each performer to exercise their authorship\, agency\, and invention. What does it take to meet the moment? When does it feel good to give more? When does it feel right to keep 10% for yourself? GOOD EFFORT asserts that no one else might know the effort required for you to do something—but you always do. \nPhoto Credit: Alexa Vélez
