DESCRIPTION:“Not Unlike Sunlight”: Celebrating the Legacy of Alma Thomas and Black Artistry Though Primary and Colorstruck!\n\n\nJoin acclaimed writers Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Richard J. Powell for a conversation celebrating the legacy of pioneering artist Alma Thomas and the enduring influence of Black artistry. \nHosted on the closing day of All American: Contemporary Perspectives from HBCU Artists\, the program brings Gumbs and Powell together in celebration of their new books\, Primary and Colorstruck!. In Primary\, Gumbs writes as a spiritual student of Thomas\, offering a poetic response to Thomas’s life and work\, while Colorstruck! draws upon Powell’s expansive scholarship on color\, Black art\, and visual culture\, with Thomas among the artists considered throughout the book. \nAs the first graduate of Howard University’s art department\, Thomas holds an important place within the history of HBCU arts education and American abstraction. Through readings and conversation\, Gumbs and Powell will reflect on her creative legacy\, the possibilities of writing alongside visual art\, and the many shades of Black artistic expression that continue to emerge in her wake. \n \nAbout the Authors \nDr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs\, author of Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde is a queer Black feminist love evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all life. Publisher’s Weekly calls her writing “groundbreaking.” She is also the author of four earlier books aka portable textual ceremonies\, including Undrowned which won the 2022 Whiting Award in Non-Fiction. A recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize in Poetry\, the National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a National Humanities Center Fellowship\, Dr. Gumbs lives and loves in Durham\, North Carolina. \nDr. Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University\, where he has taught since 1989. Powell\, an authority on African American art\, has organized numerous art exhibitions\, most notably: The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism (1989); Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance (1997); To Conserve A Legacy: American Art at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (1999); Back to Black: Art\, Cinema\, and the Racial Imaginary (2005); and Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014). Powell has published books on numerous topics\, including Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (1991)\, Black Art: A Cultural History (1997\, 2002 & 2021)\, Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture (2008)\, Going There: Black Visual Satire (2020)\, and Colorstruck! Painting\, Pigment\, Affect (2026). From 2007 until 2010\, Powell was Editor-in-Chief of The Art Bulletin\, the world’s leading English language journal in art history. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the connection between curators and artists from Artspace's current and former Creative Directors!\n\n\nWhat does artistic excellence look like? How do curators make decisions? How can arts organizations best support artists in today’s world?  \nThis panel discussion brings together three current and former Artspace Creative Directors: Jonh Blanco\, Annah Lee\, and Lia Newman. \nIn connection with FRESH 2026\, Artspace’s biennial exhibition of North Carolina artists\, the conversation will explore the relationship between curators and artists in today’s contemporary art landscape. \nParticipants will learn about how artists are selected and supported by arts institutions\, the individual curatorial approaches of each panelist\, and the opportunities and challenges of the field. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \n \nAbout the Panelists \nJonh Blanco – current Creative Director\, Artspace \nJonh Blanco is the Creative Director at Artspace\, where they lead the organization’s curatorial vision for exhibitions\, residencies\, and artist-centered programs. A Filipinx-American artist\, curator\, and cultural leader\, Jonh’s undisciplined practice engages community\, accessibility\, care\, and collective imagination through performance art\, education\, and social practice. They earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Artspace\, Jonh served as Museum Manager at 21c Museum Hotel Durham. Their work is grounded in the belief that artists and cultural organizations can create meaningful spaces for belonging\, dialogue\, and positive community change. \n \nAnnah Lee – Manager\, Holly Springs Cultural Center (Artspace Creative Director: 2015–2025) \nAnnah Lee has worked in the visual arts field in her hometown of Raleigh\, NC for the past 15 years\, where she is a member of the City’s Public Art and Design Board. Since 2025\, she has worked in the town of Holly Springs as Manager of the Cultural Center. Annah received her Master’s Degree in Art History and completed her PhD coursework at UNC-Chapel Hill. Having forged strong interpersonal relationships with artists\, institutions\, and community members to ensure programming is relevant to our communities\, Lee programs art and artists who respond to current cultural issues. Using art as a lens to explore and understand problems\, behaviors\, and events we collectively face\, while placing a strong emphasis on process and technical mastery\, Lee continues to expand access for all to engage with art as a vehicle to appreciate and understand human experience. \n \nLia Newman – Director/Curator\, Davidson College Art Galleries (Artspace Director of Programs + Exhibitions\, 2002–2012) \nLia Rose Newman has been Director/Curator of the Davidson College Art Galleries since January 2013. In her current role\, she provides leadership for the advancement of visual art at Davidson College\, curating exhibitions and related programming and providing strategic vision to create an inclusive\, interdisciplinary center of learning. With specific interests in socially and politically-engaged art practices\, Newman’s curatorial projects have explored such topics as HIV\, climate catastrophe\, and immigration. She earned a BA in Art History and a BFA in General Studio with concentrations in sculpture and photography from Winthrop University\, and an MA from Duke University.  \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh.
