Just like every little girl\, she loved to play with her mother’s jewelry. She was drawn to the fun geometric shapes and the bold colors\, especially the 80s clip resin earrings. Years later\, she began to collect her own jewelry when she was in college. As a maker\, she was fascinated with the idea of making her own jewelry and in 2006 she was introduced to “Beginning Metals and Jewelry” class in her junior year. As soon as she held that jeweler’s saw in her hand\, she knew she had found her calling. \nIn 2012 she received her MA and MFA degrees in Metals and Jewelry from Savannah College of Art and Design. During the three and half year of her graduate school training she created one-of-kind jewelry not only for her loved ones but also for clients that she met at the Philadelphia Museum of Art craft shows. She enjoys the sense of achievement that comes from knowing how much joy her jewelry brings to her clients. She became absorbed with the challenge of problem-solving and brainstorming designs and making the jewelry. She didn’t want to stop\, so in order to continuously share her passion with the world\, she founded Raleigh-based HTY Jewelry in 2013. \nAbout Artspace // \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. SUMMARY:From Mud a Garden Grows: Painting Emotional Connections with Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join studio artist Leslie Pruneau for a painting workshop that explores both the external and internal landscapes that connect us.\n\n\nFrom the Mud Grows a Garden: Painting Emotional Connections with Nature \nFocus: Painting: Nature Scenes | Instructor: Leslie Pruneau \nIt is a wonder to see vibrant life emerge from a muddy plot of soil! And similarly\, in painting\, we can quickly transform a muddy palette and underpainting into colorful canvases filled with emotion and enough visual information to spark change in the viewer’s experience. Join oil painter Leslie Pruneau at Artspace for this immersive half-day painting workshop where we will explore both the external and our own internal landscapes. \nThrough quick warm-up exercises and live demonstrations\, participants will work independently\, receiving personalized one-on-one critiques with a focus on application processes and the powerful use of colors to reveal their own creative connections with the natural world. Feel free to bring in your own image(s) for your painting reference… a favorite tree\, creek\, flower\, or hiking trail scene would work well. There will also be a simple still-life of flowers set up as an on-site botanical reference to work from as well. \nThis is an intermediate-level painting workshop. Instructor’s demos will be performed in oil\, but the class is open to different mediums (acrylics\, watercolors\, pastels are all welcome). Students should be familiar with their painting medium\, and should bring their own materials; Artspace will supply easels and can help supplement some materials as needed. \n \nAbout Artspace // \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Rowena Federico Finn
DESCRIPTION:Join Virginia-based artist Rowena Federico Finn for a discussion of her solo exhibition on view at Artspace.\n\n\nJoin artist Rowena Federico Finn for a discussion on migration\, memory\, identity\, colonization\, and more related to her solo exhibition Inventing a Homeland on view at Artspace until April 4. \n \nAbout Rowena Federico Finn \nROWENA FEDERICO FINN’s work combines Philippine Indigenous materials with American crafting traditions to create what she calls Filipina-Futurism: intricate\, tactile pieces that form a new visual and cultural language—one that speaks to the experience of being neither fully from one place nor the other\, while imagining futures in which those in-between spaces are sources of power. Her practice is rooted in her lived experiences as an artist\, mother\, educator\, and community activist shaped by colonialism\, patriarchy\, and other forces that define belonging. Through these lenses\, Rowena creates work that holds space for viewers to reflect on their own identities\, inheritances\, and the environments that have shaped them; the personal becomes a point of connection\, inviting others to see their own stories mirrored in the tension and resilience embedded in each piece. She has won numerous awards and exhibited throughout the country\, and her work was recently acquired by the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk\, VA. Rowena lives in Virginia with her husband and three children. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Textile Artists
DESCRIPTION:Join textile artists Gabriele DiTota\, Ellen Lindner\, and Jo-Ann Morgan for a discussion on contemporary textile art.\n\n\nThe artists will share about their personal practices\, inspiration\, and processes in connection with Jo-Ann’s solo exhibition A Portrait is a Prayer\, and Gabriele & Ellen’s exhibition Fabric\, Dye\, and Serendipity\, both on view at Artspace. \nAbout the Artists: \nGabriele DiTota: Gabriele was born in Northern Germany where her mother was a seamstress. As a young child she would play around the sewing machine trying to stay out of the way of the treadle. Fast forward and two careers later\, Gabriele finds herself in Central Florida where her interest in fabric is rekindled. Matching seams and exact piecing were the first efforts in textile art but they quickly gave way to an organic raw-edge approach to art quilting. Gabriele was delighted to learn that her great grandfather was a dyer of fabric by profession as she has also discovered the excitement of using dyes and surface design to create her own fabrics. The inspiration for Gabriele’s pieces may spring from her imagination\, be based on personal experiences or be influenced by social matters that affect our lives. \nEllen Lindner: Ellen Lindner is a talented quilt artist and teacher\, who is passionate about making fabric into art. She says\, “I make art for the pure joy of doing so!” Known for its strong contrasts and vivid colors\, her art has been shown throughout the United States\, and beyond\, has been commissioned by several well-known hospitals\, and has been published in several magazines. Ellen has been seen on Quilting Arts TV\, where she taught some of her techniques. She’s also written two books and several magazine articles. \nJo-Ann Morgan: Jo-Ann Morgan is Professor Emerita of African American Studies and Art History\, Western Illinois University. She authored The Black Arts Movement and the Black Panther Party in American Visual Culture (2019) and Uncle Tom’s Cabin as Visual Culture (2007) and is the winner of the Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship in 2008. \nPrior to becoming a scholar of African American art and culture\, Morgan received her MFA in 1989 from the University of Wyoming in Studio Art and remained active as a visual artist while a doctoral student at UCLA (University of California\, Los Angeles; PhD\, 1997). After two decades of university teaching\, in 2020 Morgan reestablished a full-time studio practice creating stitched fabric wall hangings (art quilts) on themes related to social justice and gun violence. Her work has been shown in over twenty solo exhibitions at community art centers and at colleges and universities throughout the country. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh.
