SUMMARY:Patrizia Ferreira - Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join fiber artist Patrizia Ferreira for a conversation on nature\, humanity\, migration\, and the creative process as she discusses her solo exhibition\, Sancred Sanctuaries on view at Artspace until November 30. \nArtist Statement \n“Sacred Sanctuaries invites viewers to reflect on the many meanings of shelter — not only as a space that protects us from danger\, whether animal or human\, but also as something inherently fragile and often temporary. The word sanctuary also evokes current issues around immigration and the increasing threats to places of refuge. \nThis work encourages us to rethink what truly defines a refuge. Is it a house? Or could it be a forest\, a beach\, a makeshift structure\, or even a blanket? No matter where we are in the world\, we instinctively shape our environment to create a space of protection. \nSacred Sanctuaries explores this liminal space — the threshold between us and the world — and what it means to seek safety\, belonging\, and peace.” \nAbout Patrizia Ferreira \nPatrizia Ferreira’s work laboriously incorporates the debris of her surroundings namely\, textiles and plastic\, to create poetic pieces that speak of our society of over consumption\, and the state of our environment. By giving life to otherwise inanimate materials\, making something beautiful out of the discarded she invites the viewer to reflect upon the repercussions our actions cause on our planet. A native of Uruguay\, being an immigrant and being a woman instruments in great part her work. Pieces appear fragmented\, torn\, frayed\, depicting the obvious\, inevitable passage of time. A piece made of many disconnected parts. An analogy for how she feels. Made of many broken\, fragmented pieces – yet\, strongly rooted\, undeniably human. \nPatrizia received a bachelor’s degree in textile design from the Institute of Industrial Design in Montevideo\, Uruguay and a Master of Science degree in textile design for prints from Philadelphia University (currently Thomas Jefferson University). She is the recipient of the 2024 Emerging Artist in Residence at Artspace\, Raleigh\, NC. She is an artist and educator living in Raleigh\, NC. \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. Visit Artspace to explore exhibitions featuring national and community artists\, engage with more than 35 artists working in their studios\, and enjoy art classes and community events for all ages and abilities. SUMMARY:Artist Talk + Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION://About this event// \nFacilitated by Leticia Clementina Thomas\, this artist talk with Laura Dudu and huiyin zhou dives into the personal stories and collaborative processes that birthed their multimedia exhibit\, 辫 (biān) / 彼岸 (bǐ àn）— “for those of us who live at the shoreline”(Audre Lorde\, A Litany for Survival). Topics include collaborative image-making and writing\, queer kinship\, diasporic home making\, and cultural organizing. Following the talk\, audience will have time to explore the exhibition and ask the artists questions during the closing reception. \n//About the exhibition// \nThrough photography\, family archives\, ephemera\, writing\, collage\, installation\, and participatory art\, 辫（biān) /彼岸（bǐ àn）embraces both the artists and their works as at once the shore and the water. The standing shores — individual legacies of (im)migration and wars their families endured — are braided by tender waters: the intimacy and care they share as collaborators and chosen family. \nThis project was supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \n//About Artspace// \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. Visit Artspace to explore exhibitions featuring national and community artists\, engage with more than 35 artists working in their studios\, and enjoy art classes and community events for all ages and abilities. To learn more about Artspace\, visit artspacenc.org \n//Parking and Accessibility// \nFree street parking is available on Davie Street. There is also free parking available in 5 city-owned parking decks. Metered parking is available on adjacent streets. SUMMARY:Kevin Kao - Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join ceramic artist Kevin Kao for a casual conversation on art\, form\, creation\, and identity as he discusses his solo exhibition Shape\, Shape\, Serve on view at Artspace from April 4-June 1. \nMore about Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. Visit Artspace to explore exhibitions featuring national and community artists\, engage with more than 35 artists working in their studios\, and enjoy art classes and community events for all ages and abilities. To learn more about Artspace\, visit artspacenc.org \nArtist Statement \nShape\, Shape\, Serve consists of two works by artist\, Kevin Kao\, who assembles groups of ceramic sculptures into large installations that explore systems of comprehension\, theatre\, and the collection. These themes act as metaphors for the Asian American experience\, particularly the process of assimilation\, drawing from the artists’ experience growing up as a third-culture kid – caught between multiple cultural influences and identities. \nBoth artworks in the exhibition – Serving Coasters and Buns – incorporate over 50 individual ceramic objects\, each crafted to reference bodily forms of hair\, limb\, flesh\, crevice\, and bone. These fragments are shaped\, assembled\, and recombined to reveal playful suggestions that reconsider utility\, an inherent quality associated with ceramics. \nAt the core of the exhibition are the multiple interpretations of serving. This concept is explored through many iterations: functionally as a drink coaster\, generosity in providing a look\, portion for consumption\, fulfillment of a purpose\, or an act of submission. These “serving” objects\, ask viewers to consider the roles of the body-object in presenting and navigating large social and cultural systems. \nParking and Accessibility \nFree street parking is available on Davie Street. Metered parking is available on adjacent streets. There are also several pay lots/decks nearby: City Market parking lot\, Blount Street parking deck\, and several Secure P lots for night + weekend parking (314 E Davie St\, 415 S Person St\, 417 S Person St). \nExplore accessibility information with our Know Before You Go Guide.\nhttps://artspacenc.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/KnowBeforeYouGo_2025.pdf
