The Artist in Residence will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the artistic landscape through creative, skillful collaboration with the local arts community. The artist will interact with the community through workshops, classes, and presentations and (when appropriate) exhibitions. United Arts will facilitate a collaborative relationship between the Artist in Residence and the local arts community to complete program activities.
2019-2020 Wake County Artist in Residence, Chris Janaro
Documentary photographer Chris Janaro is the second Wake County Artist in Residence. In honor of United Arts Council’s 30th anniversary, Janaro will be photographing “A Year in the Life of the Arts in Wake County.” The special project is designed to document and highlight the vibrant artistic landscape in the greater Wake County community. Community Art Coordinator, Brandi Neuwirth, will lead the project for United Arts Council.
As Artist in Residence, Janaro will interact with the community through photographing events and places in relation to multiple art forms: including but not limited to performances, visual arts opportunities and cultural and music festivals. The work will culminate in an exhibition near the end of his appointment in June, 2020.
Chris Janaro comes to Wake County from Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA in Photography from SUNY Purchase before enlisting in the US Navy. Later, he earned his MFA in Photo, Video and Related Media from The School of Visual Arts. While considering himself well rounded in practice and technique, he is drawn towards candid imagery, political events, breaking news and editorial. In addition to his media work, Chris is an avid cyclist and bike racer who enjoys long distance trail riding and the outdoors. His work has been featured in numerous print and online publications such as Cosmopolitan, PDN, Feature Shoot, Bustle, We Call it Stitch, La Republicca and Il Post.
