[Raleigh, NC]—Chris Janaro, a documentary photographer from Brooklyn, New York, has been selected as the next Wake County Artist in Residence.

As Artist in Residence, Janaro will interact with the community through photographing events and places in relation to multiple art forms; including but not limited to performances, visual arts opportunities and cultural and music festivals. His work will culminate in an exhibition near the end of his appointment in June 2020. Janaro will also conduct photography workshops, classes, and related presentations in the community.

Janaro will serve as Artist in Residence from September 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020. A schedule of his activities will be posted HERE.

Chris Janaro comes to Wake County from Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA in Photography from SUNY Purchase before enlisting in the US Navy. Later, he earned his MFA in Photo, Video and Related Media from The School of Visual Arts. While considering himself well rounded in practice and technique, he is drawn towards candid imagery, political events, breaking news and editorial. In addition to his media work, Chris is an avid cyclist and bike racer who enjoys long distance trail riding and the outdoors. His work has been featured in numerous print and online publications such as Cosmopolitan, PDN, Feature Shoot, Bustle, We Call it Stitch, La Republicca and Il Post.

"I'm very excited and honored to have been selected as this year's Wake County Artist in Residence," Janaro said. "Over the next ten months, I am looking forward to attending and documenting many cultural and artistic events, beginning with the African-American Cultural Festival, with the ultimate goal of curating a visual showcase of the year's highlights."

The Wake County Artist in Residence program is dedicated to bringing more art to the community. One artist, from a different discipline each year, is invited to reside and work in Wake County in a salaried position. This artist will make a significant contribution through creative, skillful collaboration with local arts and cultural agencies. The artist will also interact with the community through workshops, classes, presentations and (when appropriate) exhibition.
