Bluegrass Bands Headed To Wake County Schools, September 24-27, 2019

Raleigh, NC]—Seven Wake County schools will get a visit from bluegrass bands in Raleigh for the World of Bluegrass 2019 event, September 24-27, 2019. The designated schools will enjoy a 45-minute performance and instruction about the bluegrass tradition or receive a one-hour master class for their strings students.

"Thank you to United Arts for this wonderful opportunity," said Beaverdam Elementary Music Teacher, Terri Gervais. "We are very excited to have the Burnett Sisters perform for our students. I have already started my unit on Bluegrass music with my students, and they are looking forward to seeing their lesson come alive on stage."

The schedule for Bluegrass bands in the schools is as follows:

This is Raleigh's seventh year hosting The World of Bluegrass, an annual event presented by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), in downtown Raleigh. One goal of the IBMA is to help educators become more “bluegrass aware.” The classic bluegrass sound is one of the few musical genres to originate in the United States, so it has a "roots music" cultural value for American students in particular. Bluegrass music’s roots are in Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English traditional music, with later influences of African-American music’s jazz elements. Typical instruments include fiddle, acoustic guitar, mandolin, dobro and upright bass.

These performances are supported by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County in partnership with Wake County Public School System, Wake County, PineCone, and the International Bluegrass Music Association. This year the IBMA Foundation is supporting performances in the schools by Greg Cahill and The Special Consensus, Annie Savage & the Savage Hearts, and Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike.
