DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of 30 HBCU student and alumni artists and learn about Artspace's artist residency for HBCU alumni!\n\n\nJoin us for an evening celebrating the creativity\, legacy\, and continued impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities through ALL AMERICAN\, a group exhibition featuring the work of more than thirty HBCU students and alumni from across the country. \nEnjoy music\, light refreshments\, and time to explore the exhibition while connecting with participating artists and the Artspace community. Throughout the evening\, guests are invited to visit current HBCU Alumni Artist-in-Residence Lamar Whidbee in the residency suite and attend an information session led by Artspace President and CEO Carly Jones and Artist Programs Manager Alexandra Jane to learn more about the HBCU Alumni Artist-in-Residence Program\, including its mission\, application process\, and residency experience. \nShow your school spirit by wearing your HBCU apparel\, Greek letters\, or representing your alma mater\, favorite team\, community organization\, or school colors! Visitors will also have the opportunity to have their “yearbook photo” taken by photographer Sanjé James\, in support of Artspace with a small suggested donation. \n \nEvent Schedule \n6:00–6:30 PM | Reception begins with music\, refreshments\, and exhibition viewing \n6:30–7:15 PM | HBCU Alumni Artist-in-Residence Information Session \n7:15–8:00 PM | Visit Lamar Whidbee’s residency studio\, enjoy the exhibition\, connect with artists\, and have your yearbook photo taken \n \nAbout the HBCU Alumni Artist Residency \nThis year-long residency focuses on graduates from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Upon graduation\, students often lose resources\, equipment\, colleagues\, and mentors. The HBCU Alumni Residency seeks to remedy those issues by extending the learning process and broadening the experience for graduates to build their careers as visual artists. There are more 4-year HBCUs in North Carolina than anywhere else in the country\, and this residency aims to highlight and support the many talented artists graduating from these culturally rich institutions. This career-stimulating residency for an emerging artist includes a rent-free studio for one year with 24-hour access within a collaborative environment with 30+ other professional artists and art administrators.  \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. DESCRIPTION:“Not Unlike Sunlight”: Celebrating the Legacy of Alma Thomas and Black Artistry Though Primary and Colorstruck!\n\n\nJoin acclaimed writers Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Richard J. Powell for a conversation celebrating the legacy of pioneering artist Alma Thomas and the enduring influence of Black artistry. \nHosted on the closing day of All American: Contemporary Perspectives from HBCU Artists\, the program brings Gumbs and Powell together in celebration of their new books\, Primary and Colorstruck!. In Primary\, Gumbs writes as a spiritual student of Thomas\, offering a poetic response to Thomas’s life and work\, while Colorstruck! draws upon Powell’s expansive scholarship on color\, Black art\, and visual culture\, with Thomas among the artists considered throughout the book. \nAs the first graduate of Howard University’s art department\, Thomas holds an important place within the history of HBCU arts education and American abstraction. Through readings and conversation\, Gumbs and Powell will reflect on her creative legacy\, the possibilities of writing alongside visual art\, and the many shades of Black artistic expression that continue to emerge in her wake. \n \nAbout the Authors \nDr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs\, author of Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde is a queer Black feminist love evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all life. Publisher’s Weekly calls her writing “groundbreaking.” She is also the author of four earlier books aka portable textual ceremonies\, including Undrowned which won the 2022 Whiting Award in Non-Fiction. A recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize in Poetry\, the National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a National Humanities Center Fellowship\, Dr. Gumbs lives and loves in Durham\, North Carolina. \nDr. Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University\, where he has taught since 1989. Powell\, an authority on African American art\, has organized numerous art exhibitions\, most notably: The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism (1989); Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance (1997); To Conserve A Legacy: American Art at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (1999); Back to Black: Art\, Cinema\, and the Racial Imaginary (2005); and Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014). Powell has published books on numerous topics\, including Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (1991)\, Black Art: A Cultural History (1997\, 2002 & 2021)\, Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture (2008)\, Going There: Black Visual Satire (2020)\, and Colorstruck! Painting\, Pigment\, Affect (2026).
