DESCRIPTION:Join artist Vera Weinfield for a discussion about her solo exhibition on view at Artspace.\n\n\nJoin 2025 NC Emerging Artist in Residence Vera Weinfield and Artspace’s Artist Programs Manager Alexandra Jane for a discussion related to Vera’s solo exhibition Whatever Happened to Luba’s Twin? on view at Artspace from October 1-November 1. \nWhatever Happened to Luba’s Twin? explores the interwoven and malleable nature of family history and how our stories get told by future generations. The artworks in the exhibition have been made through a visual game of telephone between artist Vera Weinfield and her mother\, Joyce Block\, both passing and painting images of Vera’s grandmother\, Luba\, simultaneously constructing and uncovering a family history. \nRather than being a lecture\, our artist discussions invite the audience in for a shared small-group conversation. We will take a careful look at Vera’s works\, use visual thinking strategies to interpret\, and discuss topics of legacy\, history\, family\, and memory. \nWe welcome anyone to the discussion\, regardless of your knowledge of art or the exhibition’s themes. \n \nAbout Vera Weinfield \nVera Weinfield is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. Through performance\, video\, sculpture\, drawing and painting\, Vera mines the slippages between history\, memory and myth for narratives that reveal desire more than truth. Vera graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with a BFA in 2014 and received her MFA at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill in 2024. Since 2018\, Vera has been a community artist with Los Muralistas de El Puente\, an intergenerational mural collective based in Brooklyn\, NY. Her murals inhabit community centers\, schools\, public housing\, and city streets across New York City. Vera attended the Yale Norfolk summer residency in 2013\, SOMA summer residency\, Tlaxcala\, MX in 2023\, the Emerging Artist residency at ArtSpace in Raleigh\, NC in 2025\, and was the 2024 recipient of the American Austrian Foundation’s Seebacher Fine Arts Award. She has presented her work at ArtSpace\, Raleigh\, NC\, CAM Raleigh\, NC\, The Ackland Museum\, Chapel Hill\, NC\, Little Berlin\, Philadelphia\, PA\, and at PAFA\, Philadelphia\, PA. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. SUMMARY:FRESH 2026 Cultural Leaders Panel
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the connection between curators and artists from Artspace's current and former Creative Directors!\n\n\nWhat does artistic excellence look like? How do curators make decisions? How can arts organizations best support artists in today’s world?  \nThis panel discussion brings together three current and former Artspace Creative Directors: Jonh Blanco\, Annah Lee\, and Lia Newman. \nIn connection with FRESH 2026\, Artspace’s biennial exhibition of North Carolina artists\, the conversation will explore the relationship between curators and artists in today’s contemporary art landscape. \nParticipants will learn about how artists are selected and supported by arts institutions\, the individual curatorial approaches of each panelist\, and the opportunities and challenges of the field. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \n \nAbout the Panelists \nJonh Blanco – current Creative Director\, Artspace \nJonh Blanco is the Creative Director at Artspace\, where they lead the organization’s curatorial vision for exhibitions\, residencies\, and artist-centered programs. A Filipinx-American artist\, curator\, and cultural leader\, Jonh’s undisciplined practice engages community\, accessibility\, care\, and collective imagination through performance art\, education\, and social practice. They earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Artspace\, Jonh served as Museum Manager at 21c Museum Hotel Durham. Their work is grounded in the belief that artists and cultural organizations can create meaningful spaces for belonging\, dialogue\, and positive community change. \n \nAnnah Lee – Manager\, Holly Springs Cultural Center (Artspace Creative Director: 2015–2025) \nAnnah Lee has worked in the visual arts field in her hometown of Raleigh\, NC for the past 15 years\, where she is a member of the City’s Public Art and Design Board. Since 2025\, she has worked in the town of Holly Springs as Manager of the Cultural Center. Annah received her Master’s Degree in Art History and completed her PhD coursework at UNC-Chapel Hill. Having forged strong interpersonal relationships with artists\, institutions\, and community members to ensure programming is relevant to our communities\, Lee programs art and artists who respond to current cultural issues. Using art as a lens to explore and understand problems\, behaviors\, and events we collectively face\, while placing a strong emphasis on process and technical mastery\, Lee continues to expand access for all to engage with art as a vehicle to appreciate and understand human experience. \n \nLia Newman – Director/Curator\, Davidson College Art Galleries (Artspace Director of Programs + Exhibitions\, 2002–2012) \nLia Rose Newman has been Director/Curator of the Davidson College Art Galleries since January 2013. In her current role\, she provides leadership for the advancement of visual art at Davidson College\, curating exhibitions and related programming and providing strategic vision to create an inclusive\, interdisciplinary center of learning. With specific interests in socially and politically-engaged art practices\, Newman’s curatorial projects have explored such topics as HIV\, climate catastrophe\, and immigration. DESCRIPTION:“Not Unlike Sunlight”: Celebrating the Legacy of Alma Thomas and Black Artistry Though Primary and Colorstruck!\n\n\nJoin acclaimed writers Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Richard J. Powell for a conversation celebrating the legacy of pioneering artist Alma Thomas and the enduring influence of Black artistry. \nHosted on the closing day of All American: Contemporary Perspectives from HBCU Artists\, the program brings Gumbs and Powell together in celebration of their new books\, Primary and Colorstruck!. In Primary\, Gumbs writes as a spiritual student of Thomas\, offering a poetic response to Thomas’s life and work\, while Colorstruck! draws upon Powell’s expansive scholarship on color\, Black art\, and visual culture\, with Thomas among the artists considered throughout the book. \nAs the first graduate of Howard University’s art department\, Thomas holds an important place within the history of HBCU arts education and American abstraction. Through readings and conversation\, Gumbs and Powell will reflect on her creative legacy\, the possibilities of writing alongside visual art\, and the many shades of Black artistic expression that continue to emerge in her wake. \n \nAbout the Authors \nDr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs\, author of Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde is a queer Black feminist love evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all life. Publisher’s Weekly calls her writing “groundbreaking.” She is also the author of four earlier books aka portable textual ceremonies\, including Undrowned which won the 2022 Whiting Award in Non-Fiction. A recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize in Poetry\, the National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a National Humanities Center Fellowship\, Dr. Gumbs lives and loves in Durham\, North Carolina. \nDr. Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University\, where he has taught since 1989. Powell\, an authority on African American art\, has organized numerous art exhibitions\, most notably: The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism (1989); Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance (1997); To Conserve A Legacy: American Art at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (1999); Back to Black: Art\, Cinema\, and the Racial Imaginary (2005); and Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014). Powell has published books on numerous topics\, including Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (1991)\, Black Art: A Cultural History (1997\, 2002 & 2021)\, Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture (2008)\, Going There: Black Visual Satire (2020)\, and Colorstruck! Painting\, Pigment\, Affect (2026). DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of 30 HBCU student and alumni artists and learn about Artspace's artist residency for HBCU alumni!\n\n\nJoin us for an evening celebrating the creativity\, legacy\, and continued impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities through ALL AMERICAN\, a group exhibition featuring the work of more than thirty HBCU students and alumni from across the country. \nEnjoy music\, light refreshments\, and time to explore the exhibition while connecting with participating artists and the Artspace community. Throughout the evening\, guests are invited to visit current HBCU Alumni Artist-in-Residence Lamar Whidbee in the residency suite and attend an information session led by Artspace President and CEO Carly Jones and Artist Programs Manager Alexandra Jane to learn more about the HBCU Alumni Artist-in-Residence Program\, including its mission\, application process\, and residency experience. \nShow your school spirit by wearing your HBCU apparel\, Greek letters\, or representing your alma mater\, favorite team\, community organization\, or school colors! The HBCU Alumni Residency seeks to remedy those issues by extending the learning process and broadening the experience for graduates to build their careers as visual artists. There are more 4-year HBCUs in North Carolina than anywhere else in the country\, and this residency aims to highlight and support the many talented artists graduating from these culturally rich institutions. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Sam van Strien for a discussion about his solo exhibition on view at Artspace.\n\n\nJoin artist Sam van Strien and Artspace’s Artist Programs Manager Alexandra Jane for a discussion related to Sam’s solo exhibition From This Valley We Soon Will Be Leaving on view at Artspace from August 6-September 27. \nFrom This Valley We Soon Will Be Leaving brings together drawings\, rubbings\, and prints by Sam van Strien that explore the lasting legacy of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)\, the sweeping New Deal program that transformed the Southeastern United States during the 1930s and 1940s. Through electrification\, dam construction\, and flood control\, the TVA transformed the region into a symbol of modernization and economic growth. Yet beneath this narrative of progress lies another history – one marked by displacement\, submerged towns\, and the erasure of homes\, lives\, and memories. \nRather than being a lecture\, our artist discussions invite the audience in for a shared small-group conversation. We will take a careful look at Sam’s works\, use visual thinking strategies to interpret\, and discuss some of the following topics: \n\nWho benefits from large-scale development? Who pays the costs?\nHow do we remember the places and structures that are no longer here?\nHow does our built environment influence our collective memory and sense of heritage?\n\nWe welcome anyone to the discussion\, regardless of your knowledge of art or the exhibition’s themes. \n \nAbout Sam van Strien \nSam van Strien is an artist and professor based between Bloomington\, Indiana\, and Durham\, North Carolina. He earned his MFA from Ohio State University and a BA from Central Saint Martins at the University of the Arts London. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Indiana University Bloomington\, teaching in the interdisciplinary J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program. \nSam van Strien is a visual artist whose work examines the relationship between architecture and capitalism\, exploring how these forces shape our built environment. Through research and studio-based practice\, he employs techniques such as rubbings\, laser-cut engravings of photographs\, and drawings sourced from archival records. Sam’s work is a document and visual remnants of our urban landscape\, questioning whether the essence of architecture can truly be captured through mediated images\, or if it exists only as concrete matter – as a place we can touch and see. \nvan Strien’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues including The Koppel Project (London)\, Keumsan Gallery (Seoul)\, and the Knoxville Museum of Art. He has received support from Arts Council England\, The Netherland-America Foundation\, and Indiana University Bloomington\, and has completed residencies at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts\, Vermont Studio Center\, and USF Verftet (Norway). \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. DESCRIPTION:A great bonding experience for a mother + child\, join us and learn the basics of hand-stamping metal jewelry in this engaging workshop.\n\n\nA great bonding experience for a mother + child\, join us and learn the basics of hand-stamping metal jewelry in this engaging\, hands-on class at Artspace. In this workshop\, you’ll be introduced to the essential tools\, materials\, and techniques used in hand-stamped metal jewelry. Through demonstrations and guided practice\, you’ll learn how to use metal stamps\, hammer and customize your designs\, and finish your pieces with professional results. \nEach participant will create two metal cuff bracelets using aluminum blanks\, one to keep and one to give! A variety of letters\, numbers\, and decorative symbols will be available so you can personalize your jewelry with meaningful words and patterns. \nAll tools and materials are provided. No experience necessary. The age for this workshop is suitable from pre-teen to 70+. Adult participants will also enjoy some refreshing mimosas\, courtesy of Artspace. \nTickets are sold in pairs and include all materials and drinks. Just like every little girl\, she loved to play with her mother’s jewelry. She was drawn to the fun geometric shapes and the bold colors\, especially the 80s clip resin earrings. Years later\, she began to collect her own jewelry when she was in college. As a maker\, she was fascinated with the idea of making her own jewelry and in 2006 she was introduced to “Beginning Metals and Jewelry” class in her junior year. As soon as she held that jeweler’s saw in her hand\, she knew she had found her calling. \nIn 2012 she received her MA and MFA degrees in Metals and Jewelry from Savannah College of Art and Design. During the three and half year of her graduate school training she created one-of-kind jewelry not only for her loved ones but also for clients that she met at the Philadelphia Museum of Art craft shows. She enjoys the sense of achievement that comes from knowing how much joy her jewelry brings to her clients. She became absorbed with the challenge of problem-solving and brainstorming designs and making the jewelry.
