SUMMARY:Making Music at the NC Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Explore the intersection of art and music at NCMA in this experiential\, experimental exploration of ekphrasis!\nMaking Music at NCMA \nJoin us in person for a fun and interactive workshop at the North Carolina Museum of Art! Whether you’re an art lover\, music lover\, or just curious and creative\, this event lets you get hands-on in the galleries of the North Carolina Museum of Art. \nParticipants will explore the world of sound and rhythm up close and inspired by the museum’s incredible collection. Meet fellow enthusiasts\, try out instruments\, and collaborate in small groups to create short musical compositions that interpret and describe the art you’re seeing. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to make music and memories! \nYour hosts are Greg Whitt and Annelies Gentile\, professional teaching artists collaborating on a new body of work: EKPHRASTIC MUSIC. It’s an ancient Greek approach for interpreting visual art through other art forms. Traditionally it’s literary\, but we’re taking it in new directions to broaden the practice and foster the connection between art and music. \nYou don’t need to be a musician or an artist to join in\, just willing to stretch your creative boundaries a bit. Only twenty tickets are available due to limited space in the galleries. \nNOTE: This workshop will be photographed and filmed. Greg and Annelies will present this project at an arts-based symposium in New Mexico at the end of February. Your participation is an implied photo release\, and your enthusiam will support this exciting new experimental approach to arts integration. \nTicket holders meet at the entrance to NCMA’s West Building (the new\, modern one). Please arrive at least ten minutes before 2pm.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Jason Craighead
DESCRIPTION:Join internationally renowned artist Jason Craighead for a discussion of his solo exhibition on view at Artspace Nov 21-Feb 15.\n\n\nJoin artist Jason Craighead for discussion on unpredictability\, trust\, artistic evolution\, and more related to his solo exhibition A Fine State of Disrepair on view at Artspace from November 21-February 15. \n \nAbout Jason Craighead \nJASON CRAIGHEAD is a process-based artist whose works on paper capture a raw\, frenetic energy through evocative mark-making rooted in Abstract Expressionism. While much of Craighead’s practice focuses on the physicality of his materials\, many of his works also include handwritten references taken from music and literature. \nCraighead begins his paintings with what he describes as a process of “seasoning” of his canvases\, using them as drop cloths on the studio floor—where they soak up the artist’s spontaneous drips\, spills\, and footprints—before they are primed and pinned to the wall. \nA former gallery owner\, Craighead held his first solo museum exhibition\, “Threshold” (2018) in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, followed by “Endlessness of the River” (2020) in Turku\, Finland. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. Visit Artspace to explore exhibitions featuring national and community artists\, engage with more than 35 artists working in their studios\, and enjoy art classes and community events for all ages and abilities. To learn more about Artspace\, visit artspacenc.org \n \nParking and Accessibility \nFree street parking is available on Davie Street. SUMMARY:PineCone Open Bluegrass Jam
DESCRIPTION:This jam was rescheduled from its original Monday\, Jan. 26\, date due to weather. The jam will continue on every fourth Monday of the month. \nThe monthly PineCone Bluegrass Jam is a “circle jam\,” where musicians gather in a circle and play together. Tunes are played up to speed and everyone interested in playing bluegrass instruments is  welcome. \n \nThis jam will be held outdoors when weather permits. TransferCo has a beautiful patio\, with lots of room for pickers and spectators alike. There’s also a spacious ballroom just off the Food Hall that’s got room for a nice sized circle. \nJam leader Ron Raxter is pictured far left playing the upright bass. (photo by Tom Beck)\nFacilitated Ron Raxter\, the repertoire includes both instrumentals and vocal songs. Ron is one of PineCone’s founding members and is active in a number of local jams. He’s a retired attorney\, bass player and was part of the local organizing committee that helped recruit IBMA’s World of Bluegrass to Raleigh. \nIn the colder months the jam is held in the TransferCo Ballroom. (photo by Maurice Melvin)\nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. If you want to play at a slower tempo you might want to check out our monthly “Beginners’ Jam” at Harry’s Guitar Shop.  Regardless\, this is a great place to meet other musicians who share your enthusiasm for bluegrass. \nPlease remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a big crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome! Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nThe PineCone Bluegrass Jam meets on the fourth Monday of each month at Transfer Co. Food Hall in downtown Raleigh.
