SUMMARY:PineCone Old Time Jam at Riparian
DESCRIPTION:PineCone’s Old Time Jam takes place on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7-9 p.m. at the Riparian Provision Company (1408 South Saunders Street\, Raleigh). This is an up-to-speed\, gather-in-a-circle kind of jam. It’s led by great players who work to make sure there’s space for everyone in the tunes. \n \nThe leader picks a key (D\, A and G are popular) and calls tunes in that key until it feels right to pick a new key and retune. The fiddlers traditionally call the tunes\, but they’re not always the jam leader. If you’re playing fiddle you should expect to be asked\, “Hey\, you got a good D tune?” While “no” is an acceptable answer\, it’s good to have a tune in each key that you’d feel comfortable calling and kicking off. \n \nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. Please remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a good crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome. Also: Big\, mixed-level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nRecent tunes include: \nFly Around (D) \nSoldier’s Joy (D) \nWhiskey Before Breakfast (D) \nYellow Rose of Texas (D) \nBooth (A) \nJohn Brown’s Dream (A) \nKitchen Girl (A) \nJune Apple (A) \nNail That Catfish to the Tree (G) \nBig Scotia (G) \nElk River Blues (G) \nJenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night (G)

SUMMARY:FREE WORKSHOP: Old-Time Fiddle and Banjo with Erynn Marshall and Carl Jones
DESCRIPTION:In this “Tunes of Old Galax” fiddle/banjo class we’ll delve into the style of older-generation fiddlers and banjo players from Southwest Virginia. \nThe class will consist of 2 sections. In the first one\, fiddle and banjo players will divide up by instrument and learn a song or two. In the second section\, the whole group will come together and play what they’ve learned.  \nWe’ll discuss the many characteristics of this regional style and help you get an “old-time sound.” Fiddle and banjo music in Southwest Virginia is a living\, aural tradition\, so we’ll learn by ear but the teachers also provide transcriptions. Recording device recommended.  \nAll ages. Beginner to intermediate levels. Event is free\, but you must register to attend. Registration is through Dix Park and begins May 30. Register & find more info here.  \n  \nErynn Marshall and Carl Jones are old-time musicians and inspired tunesmiths from Galax\, Virginia. They are married – in life and music. Southern song-duets and powerful fiddle\, guitar\, mandolin\, banjo tunes comprise their diverse sets. Erynn and Carl play with spontaneity and vitality. While rooted in the traditional sounds of older players\, this duo stays true to their own muse by composing new\, tradition-rooted music. Carl’s song “Last Time on the Road” was featured on the Grammy-award winning album Unleashed by the Nashville Bluegrass Band. They have won many awards for their playing\, including Erynn’s 1st place fiddle win at Clifftop and Carl’s 3rd place fingerpicking-guitar win at Winfield – both premier festivals in the United States. They have 15 recordings between them\, including their duet CD Sweet Memories Never Leave. Erynn and Carl have recently toured in the US\, Canada\, Europe\, Australia and China.
