SUMMARY:JazzTales - A Community Concert
DESCRIPTION:Author Trinity Bursey and the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra are bringing their powerful and joyful fusion of music and storytelling to Knightdale\, NC. In this one-of-a-kind 40-minute program\, Trinity brings her beloved children’s book\, The Day the Instruments Split\, to life through a live reading accompanied by a full 17-piece jazz big band under the direction of Gregg Gelb featuring Gelb’s original compositions. \nThis free JazzTales performance is part of a larger community based project that will result in the composition of a new piece of jazz music inspired by and dedicated to the Knightdale community. After we share the book and original composition with the community through this performance\, we will facilitate a post-concert community discussion about the themes in JazzTales – focusing on the importance of working together as a community and fostering deeper community connections. \nFrom this discussion\, author Trinity Bursey will develop a new story (JazzTales Continued)\, and Dr. Gregg Gelb will compose new music to accompany the story. Once the story and music are complete\, they will return to Knightdale in Spring 2026 to premiere the new work and continue the conversation with the community.

SUMMARY:PineCone Old Time Jam at Riparian
DESCRIPTION:Held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm at the Riparian Provision Company (1408 South Saunders Street\, Raleigh). This is an up to speed\, gather in a circle kind of jam. It’s led by great players who work to make sure there’s space for everyone in the tunes. \nThe leader picks a key (D\, A and G are popular) and calls tunes in that key until it feels right to pick a new key and retune. The fiddlers traditionally call the tunes\, but not always the jam leader. If you’re playing fiddle you should expect to be asked\, “Hey\, you got a good D tune?” While “no” is an acceptable answer\, it’s good to have a tune in each key that you’d feel comfortable calling and kicking off. \n \nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. Please remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a good crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome. Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nRecent tunes include: \nFly Around (D) \nSoldier’s Joy (D) \nWhiskey Before Breakfast (D) \nYellow Rose of Texas (D) \nBooth (A) \nJohn Brown’s Dream (A) \nKitchen Girl (A) \nJune Apple (A) \nNail That Catfish to the Tree (G) \nBig Scotia (G) \nElk River Blues (G) \nJenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night (G)

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Mattress
DESCRIPTION:Many moons ago in a far-off place\, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son\, Prince Dauntless\, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince\, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is\, until the “shy” swamp princess\, Winnifred the Woebegone\, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test\, marry her prince\, and help Lady Larken and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs\, by turns hilarious and raucous\, romantic and melodic\, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. For after all\, a princess is a delicate thing.

SUMMARY:Artist Tour w/ huiyin zhou
DESCRIPTION:Join artist huiyin zhou for a tour of the exhibition\, 辫 (biān) / 彼岸 (bǐ àn)\, plus guided meditation\, journaling\, and space for reflection\n\n\nJoin artist huiyin zhou for a tour of the exhibition\, 辫 (biān) / 彼岸 (bǐ àn). This is an intentionally slow and intimate space with a brief guided meditation\, walkthrough of the exhibit\, prompts for journaling and conversation\, and self-guided exploration. Feel free to bring cushions\, yoga mats\, and anything other objects for comfort. \n \nAbout the exhibition \nThrough photography\, family archives\, ephemera\, writing\, collage\, installation\, and participatory art\, 辫（biān) /彼岸（bǐ àn）embraces both the artists and their works as at once the shore and the water. The standing shores — individual legacies of (im)migration and wars their families endured — are braided by tender waters: the intimacy and care they share as collaborators and chosen family. \nHere\, the boundary between land and water is not fixed. The shoreline is never static nor linear\, but cared with fluidity: wave\, water\, crossing\, merging. When we look closely\, it touches our feet — tickling\, grounding. When we gaze from afar\, it becomes the horizon. A space of transcendence. Of becoming. \nThis project was supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. Visit Artspace to explore exhibitions featuring national and community artists\, engage with more than 35 artists working in their studios\, and enjoy art classes and community events for all ages and abilities. To learn more about Artspace\, visit artspacenc.org \n \nParking and Accessibility \nFree street parking is available on Davie Street. Metered parking is available on adjacent streets. There are also several pay lots/decks nearby: City Market parking lot\, Blount Street parking deck\, and several Secure P lots for night + weekend parking (314 E Davie St\, 415 S Person St\, 417 S Person St). \nExplore accessibility information with our Know Before You Go Guide.

DESCRIPTION:Many moons ago in a far-off place\, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son\, Prince Dauntless\, found a bride. SUMMARY:PineCone Open Bluegrass Jam
DESCRIPTION:The monthly PineCone Bluegrass Jam is a “circle jam\,” where musicians gather in a circle and play together. Tunes are played up to speed and everyone interested in playing bluegrass instruments is  welcome. \nThis jam will be held outdoors when weather permits. TransferCo has a beautiful patio\, with lots of room for pickers and spectators alike. There’s also a spacious ballroom just off the Food Hall that’s got room for a nice sized circle. \nJam leader Ron Raxter is pictured far left playing the upright bass. (photo by Tom Beck)\nFacilitated Ron Raxter\, the repertoire includes both instrumentals and vocal songs. Ron is one of PineCone’s founding members and is active in a number of local jams. He’s a retired attorney\, bass player and was part of the local organizing committee that helped recruit IBMA’s World of Bluegrass to Raleigh. \nIn the colder months the jam is held in the TransferCo Ballroom. (photo by Maurice Melvin)\nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. If you want to play at a slower tempo you might want to check out our monthly “Beginners’ Jam” at Harry’s Guitar Shop.  Regardless\, this is a great place to meet other musicians who share your enthusiasm for bluegrass. \nPlease remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a big crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome! Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nThe PineCone Bluegrass Jam meets on the fourth Monday of each month at Transfer Co. Food Hall in downtown Raleigh.

SUMMARY:Raleigh Little Theatre's Second Stage: Exit\, Pursued by a Bear
DESCRIPTION:Raleigh Little Theatre is thrilled to announce a brand new initiative for the 2025-2026 season: the Second Stage Series. This exciting new series will be dedicated to exploring narratives and themes that are not often part of our mainstage programming. We hope these staged readings will offer an opportunity to engage with bold\, often challenging\, material that pushes boundaries\, explores new perspectives\, and broadens the horizons of both our artists and audiences. \nExit\, Pursued by a Bear \nBy Lauren Gunderson\nDirected by Mikki Marvel \nNan has decided to teach her abusive husband Kyle a lesson. With the help of her friend Simon (acting as her emotional—and actual—cheerleader)\, a sex worker named Sweetheart\, and the words of William Shakespeare\, she tapes Kyle to a chair and forces him to watch as they reenact scenes from their painful past. In the piece de resistance\, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Through this night of emotional trials and ridiculous theatrics\, Nan and Kyle are both freed from their past in this smart\, wonderfully dark yet hopeful revenge comedy. \nPerformances: Saturday\, August 23\, 2025 at 7pm and Sunday\, August 24\, 2025 at 3pm\nLocation: Green Room\nTicket reservations open: Monday\, August 18 @ noon
