SUMMARY:Women's Only Fiber Arts: Weaving a Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave a landscape tapestry using a circle loom! These looms are a one-time use because they make a beautiful frame for your tapestry. Students will learn to design “outside the frame” along with how to warp a simple tapestry frame loom then weave using a variety of stitches and yarns to create texture and visual interest. Once your masterpiece is finished\, the tapestry will be ready to hang on the wall for all to admire your mastery of weaving! \nDates: 4/14\, 4/21\, 4/28\, 5/5\, 5/12 \nTime: Mondays 1-4 pm \nA make up date will be used if a class is canceled due to the instructor’s illness\, inclement weather\, or an emergency. SUMMARY:PineCone Old Time Jam at Riparian
DESCRIPTION:Held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm at the Riparian Provision Company (1408 South Saunders Street\, Raleigh). This is an up to speed\, gather in a circle kind of jam. It’s led by great players who work to make sure there’s space for everyone in the tunes. \nThe leader picks a key (D\, A and G are popular) and calls tunes in that key until it feels right to pick a new key and retune. The fiddlers traditionally call the tunes\, but not always the jam leader. If you’re playing fiddle you should expect to be asked\, “Hey\, you got a good D tune?” While “no” is an acceptable answer\, it’s good to have a tune in each key that you’d feel comfortable calling and kicking off. \n \nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. Please remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a good crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome. Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nRecent tunes include: \nFly Around (D) \nSoldier’s Joy (D) \nWhiskey Before Breakfast (D) \nYellow Rose of Texas (D) \nBooth (A) \nJohn Brown’s Dream (A) \nKitchen Girl (A) \nJune Apple (A) \nNail That Catfish to the Tree (G) \nBig Scotia (G) \nElk River Blues (G) \nJenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night (G)

SUMMARY:Private Cathedral album release show (with Lalitree Darnielle)
DESCRIPTION:The Pinhook presents an album release show for Private Cathedral\, with Lalitree Darnielle supporting. All ages early show. \nPrivate Cathedral are a transatlantic art-pop band dreamed up by multi-instrumentalists Wendy Spitzer and Genevieve Dawson. From North Carolina (USA) and Scotland\, respectively\, Wendy and Genevieve draw on baroque pop\, art-rock\, and chamber music to produce a sound that’s at once borderless and unbothered by convention. Their debut offering was recorded by engineer Missy Thangs at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium\, a legendary NC studio. The self-titled album is joyful\, fierce\, symbolically dense\, and musically ambitious – a show of bravura\, a tour de force of fearless friendship\, a soundtrack to a mood film that has yet to be made. \nPrivate Cathedral creates music for brainy iconoclasts with big feelings. For lovers of Tune-Yards\, My Brightest Diamond\, Nick Cave\, Cate Le Bon\, and Kate Bush. \nhttps://barchandunerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/private-cathedral \nFOREST FIRES by Lalitree Darnielle – Lush\, unconventional\, delicate\, and alluring\, Forest Firesexplores how the natural world embodies and reflects the themes of human desire and longing. Using instruments such as violin\, viola\, and cello layered with electronics\, drums\, and electric guitars\, these songs reach across genres and eras to pull listeners in. \nOn “Bodies Of Water”:“a beautiful song and production…the string arrangement—and blend of acoustic and synthesized strings—is incredible.” – Robert Schneider (Apples in Stereo/Neutral Milk Hotel \nhttps://ffm.to/bodiesofwater

SUMMARY:Old-Time Banjo Workshop with Laura Boosinger
DESCRIPTION:Learn old-time banjo from Laura Boosinger. She’ll also open for Della Mae’s Down Home Concert in Fletcher Opera Theater in the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on May 16. \nThis workshop is part of a series designed to support traditional artists from the 26 counties in Western North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. As the storm rampaged through Western North Carolina last September\, traditional music was among the cultural treasures it threatened. Popular gathering spots for music-making were damaged or destroyed\, and in some cases folks lost beloved instruments to the floods. But like so much else in that region\, the music found a way to keep going\, and PineCone is happy to play a part. Several of our 2025 Down Home Concerts will feature an opening set by Western North Carolina traditional musicians\, showcasing both the music and its unstoppable spirit. The visiting musicians will also host workshops like this one to teach their skills to players in the Piedmont\, focusing on ballad singing\, old-time banjo\, old-time fiddle\, and bluegrass fiddle. \nLearn more about Laura Boosinger here.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare in the Park: Othello
DESCRIPTION:Free outdoor Shakespeare comes to Raleigh! The “green-ey’d monster” rears its ugly head in William Shakespeare’s classic tale of jealousy\, love\, and prejudice. Noble Moorish general Othello\, secretly married to his beloved Desdemona\, chooses his friend Cassio for a promotion rather than his trusted but duplicitous ensign\, Iago. Enraged\, Iago weaves a complex scheme that spirals into a frenzy of suspicion\, ultimately leading to tragic acts of violence and irreversible loss. \nThis gripping 90-minute production preserves the classic language and core story of the full play\, making it perfect for an afternoon of culture and entertainment for couples and busy families. \nPerformances at 1:00 and 4:00 \nTickets are free but reservations are recommended.
