SUMMARY:PineCone Old Time Jam at Riparian
DESCRIPTION:Held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm at the Riparian Provision Company (1408 South Saunders Street\, Raleigh). This is an up to speed\, gather in a circle kind of jam. It’s led by great players who work to make sure there’s space for everyone in the tunes. \nThe leader picks a key (D\, A and G are popular) and calls tunes in that key until it feels right to pick a new key and retune. The fiddlers traditionally call the tunes\, but not always the jam leader. If you’re playing fiddle you should expect to be asked\, “Hey\, you got a good D tune?” While “no” is an acceptable answer\, it’s good to have a tune in each key that you’d feel comfortable calling and kicking off. \n \nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. Please remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a good crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome. Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nRecent tunes include: \nFly Around (D) \nSoldier’s Joy (D) \nWhiskey Before Breakfast (D) \nYellow Rose of Texas (D) \nBooth (A) \nJohn Brown’s Dream (A) \nKitchen Girl (A) \nJune Apple (A) \nNail That Catfish to the Tree (G) \nBig Scotia (G) \nElk River Blues (G) \nJenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night (G)

SUMMARY:Patrizia Ferreira - Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join fiber artist Patrizia Ferreira for a conversation on nature\, humanity\, migration\, and the creative process as she discusses her solo exhibition\, Sancred Sanctuaries on view at Artspace until November 30. \nArtist Statement \n“Sacred Sanctuaries invites viewers to reflect on the many meanings of shelter — not only as a space that protects us from danger\, whether animal or human\, but also as something inherently fragile and often temporary. The word sanctuary also evokes current issues around immigration and the increasing threats to places of refuge. \nThis work encourages us to rethink what truly defines a refuge. Is it a house? Or could it be a forest\, a beach\, a makeshift structure\, or even a blanket? No matter where we are in the world\, we instinctively shape our environment to create a space of protection. \nSacred Sanctuaries explores this liminal space — the threshold between us and the world — and what it means to seek safety\, belonging\, and peace.” \nAbout Patrizia Ferreira \nPatrizia Ferreira’s work laboriously incorporates the debris of her surroundings namely\, textiles and plastic\, to create poetic pieces that speak of our society of over consumption\, and the state of our environment. By giving life to otherwise inanimate materials\, making something beautiful out of the discarded she invites the viewer to reflect upon the repercussions our actions cause on our planet. A native of Uruguay\, being an immigrant and being a woman instruments in great part her work. Pieces appear fragmented\, torn\, frayed\, depicting the obvious\, inevitable passage of time. A piece made of many disconnected parts. An analogy for how she feels. Made of many broken\, fragmented pieces – yet\, strongly rooted\, undeniably human. \nPatrizia received a bachelor’s degree in textile design from the Institute of Industrial Design in Montevideo\, Uruguay and a Master of Science degree in textile design for prints from Philadelphia University (currently Thomas Jefferson University). She is the recipient of the 2024 Emerging Artist in Residence at Artspace\, Raleigh\, NC. She is an artist and educator living in Raleigh\, NC. \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh.
