SUMMARY:Beer and Banjos: Yakamashii
DESCRIPTION:This week’s featured band is Yakamashii\, a Chapel Hill-based group that describes their sound as “Southern Gothic Y’allternative.” What does that sound like\, exactly? You’ll just have to join us to find out. \nBeer and Banjos is a free\, family-friendly evening of roots music every Tuesday at Raleigh’s Bowstring Pizza and Brewyard. Hosted by the mighty local musicians known collectively as the Beer and Banjos Allstars\, these weekly concerts feature guest musicians and take place on Bowstring’s spacious patio when the weather allows\, or inside by the bar when rain\, heat\, or cold threaten the vibe. \nTips for the musicians are gratefully accepted (look for a helper walking around with a bucket for cash and QR codes for online tips)\, and don’t forget to check out the merch table. Bowstring serves tasty pizza and other food as well as cold beer and other beverages. \nLearn more about Beer and Banjos events statewide here.

SUMMARY:PineCone Old Time Jam at Riparian
DESCRIPTION:Held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm at the Riparian Provision Company (1408 South Saunders Street\, Raleigh). This is an up to speed\, gather in a circle kind of jam. It’s led by great players who work to make sure there’s space for everyone in the tunes. \n \nThe leader picks a key (D\, A and G are popular) and calls tunes in that key until it feels right to pick a new key and retune. The fiddlers traditionally call the tunes\, but not always the jam leader. If you’re playing fiddle you should expect to be asked\, “Hey\, you got a good D tune?” While “no” is an acceptable answer\, it’s good to have a tune in each key that you’d feel comfortable calling and kicking off. \n \nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. Please remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a good crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome. Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nRecent tunes include: \nFly Around (D) \nSoldier’s Joy (D) \nWhiskey Before Breakfast (D) \nYellow Rose of Texas (D) \nBooth (A) \nJohn Brown’s Dream (A) \nKitchen Girl (A) \nJune Apple (A) \nNail That Catfish to the Tree (G) \nBig Scotia (G) \nElk River Blues (G) \nJenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night (G)

SUMMARY:A New Brain
DESCRIPTION:By the Tony Award-winning authors of Falsettos\, here is an energetic\, sardonic\, often comical musical about a composer during a medical emergency. Gordon collapses into his lunch and awakes in the hospital\, surrounded by his maritime-enthusiast lover\, his mother\, a co-worker\, the doctor\, and the nurses. Reluctantly\, he had been composing a song for a children’s television show that features a frog — Mr. Bungee — and the specter of this large green character and the unfinished work haunts him throughout his medical ordeal. What was thought to be a tumor turns out to be something more operable\, and Gordon recovers\, grateful for a chance to compose the songs he yearns to produce. \n*Please note this production is intended for mature audiences only (14+) \nDirected by Matthew Hager\nMusic Directed by Alex Thompson\nChoreographed by Alli Mae Carnes \nFeaturing performances from Alli Mae Carnes\, Andrew Goins\, Devin Lackey\, DJ Brinson\, Dylan Bailey\, Jordan Monadjemi\, Margaret-Ellen Christensen\, Micaela Bundy\, Susan Shank\, and Ty Spencer

By the end of the class\, you’ll have a finished project and a solid foundation in sewing basics\, giving you the skills and confidence to continue sewing on your own. No prior experience is required. All materials and machines provided. \nAre you an Artspace member or ambassador? Email Danny Peña\, Director of Education + Community Programs at dpena@artspacenc.org for your one-time promo code and receive your discount. \nAbout the instructor \nMichelle Wilkie is a self-taught textile artist and designer of modern quilts. Her artistic practice revolves around modern quilting where I seamlessly blend traditional techniques with a contemporary twist\, embracing both Improvisation and Minimalism. Many of her designs are inspired by the details she finds or experiences every day. She transforms these into art through piecing\, editing\, and quilting. \nThis year\, Michelle has had work exhibited in a solo art show at Golden Belt\, NC\, and has participated and exhibited in a community exhibition at the NC Museum of Art (NCMA). She has taught at several classes this year at events such as QuiltCon and Quilters Affair. In 2023\, Michelle was an artist in residence at Durham Art Guild and Penland School of Craft. She had her first solo art exhibition Page-Walker Center and has exhibited at CAM Raleigh\, Truist Gallery\, 311 Gallery and Artspace NC (open call + final) and curated international shows in France and Italy. She regularly has work juried into International Quilt Exhibitions (inc. QuiltCon\, Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival\, International Quilt Festival). She was featured in several magazines and published in the book Modern Quilts: Design of the New Century. \nAbout Artspace // \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh.
SUMMARY:Symphonies of Paris
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon of late Classical symphonic works composed in Paris and the North American premiere of Sergii Leontiev’s Little Bachiana\, written for Baroque Orchestra. \nSunday\, March 15th\, 4 PM\nHayes Barton United Methodist Church\n2209 Fairview Rd\, Raleigh\, NC \nThe musical scene in Paris was unlike anywhere else in Europe. The draw of talent to the Paris Conservatory also fostered musical experimentation\, exploration\, and a stretching of musical idioms. Haydn wrote his Symphony No. 87 only 10 years apart from Reicha’s first Symphony in E-flat\, but they are tonally so very different. \nWinners of the third annual High School Baroque Artist Residency Competition will also perform with the Raleigh Camerata on Haydn’s Symphony No. 87 in A major. Hear the delightful sounds of classical flutes\, oboes\, bassoons\, and horns with a full string orchestra.
