SUMMARY:Kevin Kao - Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join ceramic artist Kevin Kao for a casual conversation on art\, form\, creation\, and identity as he discusses his solo exhibition Shape\, Shape\, Serve on view at Artspace from April 4-June 1. \nMore about Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. Visit Artspace to explore exhibitions featuring national and community artists\, engage with more than 35 artists working in their studios\, and enjoy art classes and community events for all ages and abilities. To learn more about Artspace\, visit artspacenc.org \nArtist Statement \nShape\, Shape\, Serve consists of two works by artist\, Kevin Kao\, who assembles groups of ceramic sculptures into large installations that explore systems of comprehension\, theatre\, and the collection. These themes act as metaphors for the Asian American experience\, particularly the process of assimilation\, drawing from the artists’ experience growing up as a third-culture kid – caught between multiple cultural influences and identities. \nBoth artworks in the exhibition – Serving Coasters and Buns – incorporate over 50 individual ceramic objects\, each crafted to reference bodily forms of hair\, limb\, flesh\, crevice\, and bone. These fragments are shaped\, assembled\, and recombined to reveal playful suggestions that reconsider utility\, an inherent quality associated with ceramics. \nAt the core of the exhibition are the multiple interpretations of serving. This concept is explored through many iterations: functionally as a drink coaster\, generosity in providing a look\, portion for consumption\, fulfillment of a purpose\, or an act of submission. These “serving” objects\, ask viewers to consider the roles of the body-object in presenting and navigating large social and cultural systems. \nParking and Accessibility \nFree street parking is available on Davie Street. Metered parking is available on adjacent streets. There are also several pay lots/decks nearby: City Market parking lot\, Blount Street parking deck\, and several Secure P lots for night + weekend parking (314 E Davie St\, 415 S Person St\, 417 S Person St). \nExplore accessibility information with our Know Before You Go Guide.\nhttps://artspacenc.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/KnowBeforeYouGo_2025.pdf

SUMMARY:Dial M for Murder by Jeffrey Hatcher
DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey Hatcher’s new adaptation of the celebrated murder mystery that inspired Hitchcock’s masterpiece! \nTony is convinced that his wife Margot has been cheating on him. While the affair may be over\, his jealousy is not. Tony spins a web of deception that will tighten around them and ensnare them both in danger\, recrimination and murder. \nFrederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder premiered in London in 1952 before opening on Broadway later that year. SUMMARY:PineCone Old Time Jam at Riparian
DESCRIPTION:Held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm at the Riparian Provision Company (1408 South Saunders Street\, Raleigh). This is an up to speed\, gather in a circle kind of jam. It’s led by great players who work to make sure there’s space for everyone in the tunes. \nThe leader picks a key (D\, A and G are popular) and calls tunes in that key until it feels right to pick a new key and retune. The fiddlers traditionally call the tunes\, but not always the jam leader. If you’re playing fiddle you should expect to be asked\, “Hey\, you got a good D tune?” While “no” is an acceptable answer\, it’s good to have a tune in each key that you’d feel comfortable calling and kicking off. \n \nWhether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran\, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along\, or just listen and observe! However\, please note that this is not a “learning” or “slow” jam. Please remember – every jam is different! This jam tends to draw a good crowd\, and it is open to musicians of all skill levels. Please help us make sure that newer players feel welcome. Also\, big\, mixed level jams can be challenging. Patience and kindness are appreciated! \nRecent tunes include: \nFly Around (D) \nSoldier’s Joy (D) \nWhiskey Before Breakfast (D) \nYellow Rose of Texas (D) \nBooth (A) \nJohn Brown’s Dream (A) \nKitchen Girl (A) \nJune Apple (A) \nNail That Catfish to the Tree (G) \nBig Scotia (G) \nElk River Blues (G) \nJenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night (G)
