DESCRIPTION:Join ciara anais stewart and Precious Lovell for a discussion of ciara’s solo exhibition on view at Artspace May 2-June 29.\n\n\nJoin artist ciara anais stewart for a conversation on resistance\, imperialism\, and social justice\, as she discusses her solo exhibition I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free on view at Artspace from May 2-June 29. Conversation moderated by Precious Lovell. \n \nAbout ciara anais stewart \nciara anais stewart (b. 1994) is a visual artist and cultural worker born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY. In the last decade\, she has lived and grown as an artist in North Carolina\, most of that time spent in Durham. stewart earned her BA in Art\, with a concentration in Studio Art from North Carolina Central University in 2021. She was Artspace’s 2024 HBCU Artist in Residence and was recently awarded a 2025 Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant from the Durham Arts Council. stewart’s work pulls from personal\, familial\, and collective Black + Latinx histories. Through portraiture\, she uses figures to represent the themes of resistance and triumphs against oppression\, frequently employing boxing as a motif. \n \nAbout Precious Lovell \nPrecious Lovell is a mixed media artist\, a curator and educator. Her sociocultural creative practice explores the narrative potential of cloth and clothing. She holds a Master of Art and Design in Fibers and Surface Design and a BFA in Fashion Design. A former fashion designer and Associate Professor\, Precious has presented lectures on cloth and clothing of the African Diaspora at universities\, museums\, national and international conferences. She has been granted fellowships\, international artist residencies and has traveled to 45 countries researching and collecting textiles and clothing. Based in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, Precious’ work has been exhibited in the US and internationally. \n \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. DESCRIPTION:THE JUSTICE THEATER PROJECT CLOSES THE ‘24-’25 SEASON  WITH THE ACCLAIMED MUSICAL “VIOLET\,” music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Brian Crawley\, from June 6-22\, 2025—a journey towards a miracle.\nThe musical Violet explores themes of beauty\, self-acceptance\, and the impact of physical disfigurement on one’s sense of self. It also delves into themes of faith\, healing\, and the struggles of navigating a changing society during the Civil Rights Era. Ultimately\, Violet examines\, while learning to find strength and resilience in the face of adversity and learn to embrace their true selves\, despite external pressures and societal expectations. Violet centers around a young woman embarking on a long journey full of hope and dreams of a new beginning. Violet has a large scar on her face due to a childhood accident and it has\,  literally\, scarred her life. Having run out of all medical options\, she now pins all her hopes on a miracle cure from a famous TV preacher in Tulsa\, Oklahoma. On her journey of self-discovery\, she meets two soldiers\, Flick and Monty. As they travel on together\, Violet learns the true meaning of beauty\, love\, and what it means to be an outsider. Her miracle cure does not come through\, but Violet experiences a form of healing that is infinitely more valuable.
