SUMMARY:Digging Deeper: Stories in Local Archaeology Surviving Extinction: Land Claims & Tuscarora Treaties
DESCRIPTION:Come join us as Donnie “Rahnàwakęw” McDowell leads the presentation\, “Surviving Extinction: Land Claims & Tuscarora Treaties”\, which analyzes the unique relationships the ancestors of the Tuscarora Nation established with the colonial government of the State of North Carolina. \nBy placing a lens on the original agreements made between the Tuscarora and the new coming colonists\, we better comprehend the diplomatic strategies and cultural philosophies of each culture. Discussions include ancient Tuscarora archaeological sites across the State\, conflict with Europeans during the colonial era\, the establishment of Wake County and the City of Raleigh\, and the NC Assembly’s longstanding policy of Tuscarora disenfranchisement.

SUMMARY:FAIRVIEW
DESCRIPTION:Nothing is what it seems in this comic\, challenging\, and searing 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama. The committee called the play “a hard-hitting drama that examines race in a highly conceptual\, layered structure\, ultimately bringing audiences into the actors’ community to face deep-seated prejudices.” In Fairview\, the Frasier family prepares for Grandma’s birthday\, but not everything goes according to plan\, and things quickly go in unexpected directions for both the characters and the audience. What begins as a seemingly pleasant\, playful examination of a blatantly stereotyped African-American family morphs into a scalpel-sharp commentary on racism\, prejudice\, and white privilege. The play’s eventual destruction of the fourth wall delivers themes brazenly to its audience in an unforgettable theatre event. The show’s concept came from conversations with director Sarah Benson\, Sibblies Drury says. “We were both interested in thinking about surveillance and why it affects people of color in a deeper way\,” she says. “And this idea of being watched by someone as a person of color — there is automatically some sort of sense of suspicion\, especially if the watcher is a white person. And so we started from a place of trying to create what in the theater felt like a normal black family\, and then introducing the idea of someone watching that family — and that watching [changes] their behavior and the course of their lives.” \nSunday\, February 16th\, after the show: “Talkback with the Cast and Crew\,” – stay for insights from our cast about their characters\, what it is like to play these roles\, and how they adapt to the character. \nSaturday\, February 22nd\, 6:15 pm: “Who Do You Think You Are?: Racial Identities and Doing the Work to Understand Your Own Starting Point” presented by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Effua Sosoo is a licensed therapist who specializes in race-related stress and how it impacts the bodies and mood responses of Black individuals. In this pre-show discussion\, she will provide context for some of the issues and topics that the audience will encounter in the play\, inviting attendees to think about black and white racial identities\, white liberalism\, and ways that our own perceptions and experiences of the world shape our interactions with both our own and other cultures.
