DESCRIPTION:Shinsei is a haunting drama where ghosts of the past collide with myths and memories. Amid the echoes of war and the weight of tradition\, it weaves a poignant tale of mothers and daughters\, pain\, joy\, and the possibility of rebirth. Lose yourself in a world where the line between life and death vanishes.  \nThe impressive cast includes Stephanie Yu in the role of TSUBAME\, multi-faceted Katie Bolanos as both SORA and JAPANESE YŪREI\, and Olivia Silber Ashley as JEANNIE. Other distinguished local talents and puppeteers include Liam Yates\, Joy Bryant\, Dylan Bailey\, and Deb Teitelbaum. \nPlaywright Judy M. Dove shares\, “Shinsei is a very personal lullaby to my mom. My mother was Japanese\, born in Tokyo\, Japan\, and was a survivor of the Great Tokyo Air Raid in 1945\, so I grew up with firsthand\, on-the-ground accounts of the event.” Reflecting on the power of storytelling\, pain and healing\, Dove adds\, “Writing is the only way I know how to manipulate time.” \nBe among the first to witness this world premiere at the iconic Burning Coal Theatre in downtown Raleigh\, which will run from Thursday\, October 31st\, to Sunday\, November 10th\, 2024. 224 Polk St\, Raleigh\, NC 27604

DESCRIPTION:Church of the Nativity 8849 Ray Rd\, Raleigh\, NC \nWhile there is no charge for admission\, there is a suggested donation of $15. Registration for seat reservation can be completed at https://forms.gle/8sQCYMQpNkrvjE5KA \nAdditional Stream of Concert Video: Nov. 24 at 5:00 pm on the NCCMI YouTube Channel \nConcert features the complete Mendelssohn Octet for 8 string players\, as well as the premiere of James Dargan’s new String Quartet (movement 1) called Honey Rock; Wood Valley. Mr. Dargan was commissioned by NCCMI to compose the piece. \nMusicians are all members of the North Carolina Symphony: violinists Emily Glover\, Jeanine Wynton\, Erin Zehngut\, and Jessica Ryou; cellists Bonnie Thron and Elizabeth Beilman; and viola players Sam Gold and Amy Mason. \nThere will be a free webinar on Sunday\, November 3 at 7pm featuring Mr. Dargan and Dr. Timothy Holley\, moderated by Waltye Rasulala. This event will focus on Mr. Dargan’s journey from his early days as a young violinist in Durham to his prominent life as a composer and vocalist based in New York. His parents were longtime teachers at St. Augustine’s College and NC Central University. \nThe conversation will also touch upon the importance of diversity and inclusion in the arts and share the story of how NCCMI became a trailblazer in the world of chamber music training programs\, by commissioning new works and by shining a spotlight on historically overlooked music.
