SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: The Weight On My Shoulders
DESCRIPTION:Addressing the Silent Battles: Drinking Gourd Gallery Presents Exhibition Spotlighting Men’s\nMental Health in Civilian and Veteran Communities to highlight the pervasive\, but often overlooked issue of men’s mental health. \nDrinking Gourd Gallery proudly announces its upcoming exhibition\, “The Weight on My Shoulders.”\nThis group exhibition seeks to shed light on the unique challenges faced by men coping with mental\nhealth issues\, particularly within the context of civilian and veteran life. The exhibition will run from June\n1 through June 30\, 2024\, at the Southeast Regional Library in Garner\, North Carolina\, commemorating\nMen’s Mental Health Awareness Month. \nMen across all walks of life frequently grapple with mental health concerns\, yet societal stigmas often\nprevent open dialogue and hinder access to support. Against this backdrop\, “The Weight on My\nShoulders” aims to spark conversation\, promote understanding\, and provide a platform for healing.\nFeaturing more than 30 objects\, including paintings\, drawings\, photography and video\, the exhibition\ndelves into various aspects of men’s mental health experiences. Through poignant narratives and\nevocative imagery\, visitors will gain insight into the complexities of these challenges and the pathways to\nresilience and recovery.

SUMMARY:Pure Life Theatre and Burning Coal Theatre Present:
DESCRIPTION:Home by Samm Art Williams\nDirected by Jade Arnold\nFeaturing Ajani Kambon\, Moriah Williams\, and Tydiam Coleman\nEvery year\, Burning Coal Theatre uses its theatre space in Raleigh\, NC\, to foster young and emerging innovative theatre talent in a series of new works and plays in the summer months.\nOptimistic and strong\, Cephus Miles is content to work the land on the small North Carolina farm he inherited from his family. Everything is as it should be until his childhood sweetheart rejects him and goes to college. Opposed to the war in Vietnam\, Cephus refuses to serve and is imprisoned as a draft evader. By the time he is released\, Cephus has lost his land to the tax collector\, so he heads north to build a new life. With a good job and a slinky new girlfriend\, he finds the big city exciting and rewarding. But soon\, the dream begins to fade—he loses his job and becomes involved in drugs and prostitution. Pulling himself together\, Cephus returns to the land and his old sweetheart. They left to seek happiness elsewhere\, and they have returned to one another older\, wiser\, and aware of the true meaning of HOME. Reception on opening night\, June 8\, to honor the late Samm Art Williams. Dr. Linda Kerr Norflett will discuss her friendship with Samm Art Williams and how they became friends when she invited him to be a guest artist at North Carolina Central University. Wendell Tabb will be introducing Dr. Norflett. The reception is free.
