Native features the true-to-life story of two American literary greats who came together in 1941 for a ground breaking project. North Carolina native Paul Green and Richard Wright were no strangers to grappling with the issues of their time – race, class, politics, and social justice – issues that our country and our world struggle with today. Student & adult audiences alike for the show’s initial touring in 2017 and 2018 continue to affirm that Native is a conversation starter, not simply a tweet, and the production should be considered for high school audiences only (a post-show discussion is an essential element for this performance, and our company provides a moderator if the school chooses not to do so). From playwright Ian Finley, a previous North Carolina Piedmont Laureate, the play is an enhancement to any history, literary, English and social studies curriculum emphasis as well.
