On Saturday, November 15, the region’s first Piedmont Laureate will be announced and read from his/her work at the North Carolina Writers’ Network Fall Conference luncheon (at the Hilton Raleigh Durham Airport).
With the key goal “to promote awareness and heighten appreciation for excellence in the literary arts throughout the Piedmont region,” the Piedmont Laureate program is dedicated to building a literary bridge for residents to come together and celebrate the art of writing. The Laureate will present public readings and workshops, participate at select public functions, and create at least one original activity to expand appreciation of literature.
The new program is a co-sponsorship by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, Durham Arts Council, Orange County Arts Commission, and United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County.
Applications for the laureate position were received from poets living in a three-county area, and a selection committee comprised of noted poet and editor Dr. Sally Buckner, Dr. Anjail Rashida Ahmad (Director of NC A & T’s Creative Writing Program), Richard Krawiec (novelist, poet, and director of Voices), and Banu Valladares (North Carolina Arts Council) reviewed all the applications and made recommendations. The Laureate will receive an honorarium of $5,000 and serve for one year.
More than 250 writers, editors, and publishing agents will gather November 14 - 16 for the annual North Carolina Writers’ Network Fall Conference, one of the country’s largest conferences dedicated to the art and business of writing. Registration for the Fall Conference is not limited to members of the Network, or even to writers from North Carolina. Anyone with an interest in writing can sign up online, or by calling the Network at (704) 246-6314 or (919) 251-9140.
