United Arts Announces Artists in the Schools Directory Application Process

For almost 30 years, the Artists in the Schools program has helped schools in Wake and Johnston Counties bring professional artists into their classrooms. Both the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and the Johnston County Arts Council provide grants to schools that hire artists listed in the Artists Resource Directory. Applications for artists who want to be listed in the Directory are available here. The application deadline is March 21, 2008.

Artists’ applications are reviewed by a panel of educators, parents, professional artists and United Arts Council staff.

United Arts sponsors two major programs that use the Directory: Artists in the Schools and Community Arts Reach. Both programs employ the talents of professional artists in the areas of dance, music, folk arts, storytelling, theatre, visual arts and literary arts for performances, workshops and residencies in schools and communities.

Artists accepted into the AIS and/or CAR Programs will be invited to participate in the day-long Cultural Arts Festival in August 2008 in Raleigh. The Festival offers an opportunity to meet and talk with the volunteers and staff members who book programs for their schools, communities and organizations. All eligible artists may rent a booth at the Festival. Only artists who participate in the current AIS Program are eligible to showcase at the Cultural Arts Festival.

Artists in the Schools is a partnership with the Wake County Public School System and associated PTAs that supports the placement of professional artists in schools, grades K-12, for curriculum-based performances, workshops and residencies in Wake County public, private and charter schools. It is a national model that has been expanded into neighboring Johnston County through a mentoring relationship with the Johnston County Arts Council.

Major sponsors of this program include The Goodnight Educational Foundation, Wake County Public Schools, Progress Energy, Target, Applebee’s and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Raleigh Alumnae Chapter.
