Giant puppets, earth quilts, storytelling and bookmaking are just some of the arts to be explored at an August festival that enables public, private and charter schools in Wake County to select arts education programs for their students.
The event brings over 100 artists to Wake County for a daylong trade show format event with live showcase performances throughout the day. The festival allows teachers, administrators and PTA representatives to meet artists participating in the Artists in the Schools program of the United Arts and WCPSS and to see live sample performances. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the teachers and PTA reps to spend time with a large number of artists, experience their performances and have all their questions answered,” said Eleanor Jordan, President and CEO of United Arts. “This festival has a long history and is a unique opportunity.”
United Arts offers funding through this program to Wake County public, private and charter schools to bring artists into Wake schools for performances, workshops and residencies. The Festival allows school representatives to see firsthand a sampling of the artists available through United Arts Artist Resource Directory.
Last year’s event had more than 400 attendees and generated more than $300,000 in artist fees. United Arts, along with school PTAs, helped bring more than 300 arts events-including performances, residencies and workshops-to 130 Wake schools in 2006-2007. To date, more than 160 parents and teachers have committed to volunteering as Cultural Arts Representatives, committed to oversee their school’s cultural arts programming. United Arts is proud to partner with Wake County PTAs from schools throughout the county. In addition to school representatives, arts presenters and teachers from nearby counties and the state also attend the United Arts Cultural Arts Festival to see high quality artists demonstrate the programs offered for schools.
Community members are welcome to attend this event.
