North Carolina: The State of the Arts
A Statewide Conference Addressing
the Arts in 21st-Century Learning
March 5-7, 2009: Meredith College, Raleigh, NC
 
In the spring of 2007 administrators, classroom teachers, teaching artists, parents and arts administrators gathered in Charlotte to examine all facets of the arts’ impact on education in grades K - 12.
 
From March 5-7, 2009, we’re coming together to continue the discussion.

Credit for Teachers (CEUs):
With prior approval from the individuals’ local school system, educators who register and attend the full conference are eligible for 1.5 CEUs. Signed Certificates of Participation will be provided at the end of the conference. No partial credit is available. Certificates will be available for pick-up at the Registration Table at the end of the conference on Saturday, March 7.
 
The first three-day conference provided an overview of current, successful North Carolina and national practices, programs, and partnerships and culminated with tips on advocacy and a “Call to Action.’
 
This coming year, we will continue to address those topics in the context of how the arts help prepare children for their future.

Conference Goals
To position the arts as:
  • fundamental to 21st-century learning and a creative workforce
  • a catalyst for imagination, creativity and innovation.
  • a stimulus for community engagement and advancement.
Essential Questions:
  • How will we create public will to advance a new vision for arts learning in the 21st century?
  • How are imagination, creativity and innovation realized as/at the core of 21st-century learning?
  • How do we create equity and access to arts learning across North Carolina?

Propose a Session
(Deadline extended to September 19, 2008)
To propose a session, complete the Request for Proposals (MS Word) and submit it by 5:00 p.m. on September 19, 2008 to . Individuals as well as collaborative teams (i.e. teaching artist and arts educator, business member and IHE member, school system member and community arts organization, etc) are encouraged to submit proposals. Proposals will be reviewed by the Selection Committee for overall quality, as a component of a particular strand and in relation to the following criteria:
  • application is complete, presenter(s) are identified and the topic is well thought out
  • session addresses an important issue, trend or topic in the field of arts education/arts in education
  • format that engages the audience and strengthens the presentation
  • presenters represent a diversity of viewpoints, cultural backgrounds, artistic media, disciplines and genres, professional expertise, geographic locations, and community sizes
