Registration for the March 2007 "North Carolina: The State of the Arts" Statewide Conference on the Arts in 21st Century Education is now open. This Conference is the first statewide gathering of educators and arts providers.

"The arts can enrich children's lives and education," said Mary B. Regan, Executive Director of the N.C. Arts Council. "We hope to encourage communities to use the arts as a fun and meaningful way to educate children across the state."

"It is time for arts education to take its rightful place as part of a comprehensive, rigorous and balanced curriculum for all children in North Carolina's schools," said Christie Lynch Howell, Arts Education Consultant for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

"This conference provides the exciting opportunity to examine all facets of the arts' impact on education. Students deserve to access complete education in the arts -- beginning with licensed arts educators in the schools -- who work in concert with administrators, classroom teachers, teaching artists, arts institutions and others to open the door to arts education and arts experiences for all children -- within and outside the boundaries of the school," said Howell.

"The State of the Arts" is open to anyone interested in K-12 education including educators, administrators, pre-service teachers, teaching artists, arts organizations and artists, policy makers, funders, PTA/PTOs and representatives from institutes of higher education.

National arts and education leaders from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Arts Education Partnership will lead discussions on the status and vision of the arts in K-12 education.

Conference sponsors include the North Carolina Arts Council, the Arts 7 Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, The Kennedy Center Partners in Education and the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, and it is presented in collaboration with the A+ Schools Program at UNCG, the Asheville Area Arts Council, the Beaufort County Arts Council, Beaufort County Schools, the NC Department of Public Instruction, and the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County.
