Artists-in-the-Schools Grants Grow for 2006

Students in Wake County Schools will benefit from arts education for the 2006-2007 school year through an ever-expanding United Arts' partnership with the Wake County Public School System, the school PTAs and the increased funding from the Wake County Board of Commissioners.

United Arts has awarded over $111,000 to schools in the 2006-2007 school year, an increase of $10,000 compared to the prior school year. The increase was made possible in part by the generous support of the Wake County Board of Commissioners, who voted to increase funding for United Arts in the current budget cycle.

United Arts has awarded 132 Artists in the Schools grants for the 2006-2007 school year, 12 more than last year. Participation across the system continues to increase as eleven schools applied for funding this year that had not applied in the past, including four year-round schools that opened in July 2006.

Public, private and charter schools in Wake County are eligible for funding through Artists in the Schools. Each school designates a representative, either a PTA volunteer or a teacher, whose job is to oversee the grant process and to make arrangements between the school and the artist(s). On average, the schools/PTAs match the United Arts grant funds by a ratio of 2:1 and many schools book artists directly in addition to those funded through UA grants.

United Arts' grants will support more than 143,000 contact hours between artists and students, through 312 programs, including:

  • 68 artist residencies/workshops
  • 44 opera or chamber music performances
  • 125 performances
  • 76 writer residencies
