Artist Application Information
United Arts sponsors two major programs that use the Directory: Artists in the Schools and Community Arts Reach. Both programs employ the talents of professional artists in the areas of dance, music, folk arts, storytelling, theatre, visual arts and literary arts for performances, workshops and residencies in schools and communities.

ARTISTS IN THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM (AIS): United Arts administers the award-winning AIS program in public, charter and private elementary, middle and high schools in Wake County with the assistance of both teachers and parent volunteers. Johnston County also uses the Directory to find artists for its schools, as do many other communities in this area.

COMMUNITY ARTS REACH PROGRAM (CAR): The CAR program is designed to assist the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Departments of the 11 municipalities in Wake County outside of Raleigh in providing professional cultural arts programs for all ages in their communities. Artists’ applications are reviewed by a panel of educators, parents, professional artists and United Arts staff. Artists accepted into the Directory also go through a background check with United Arts.

Artists accepted into the AIS and CAR Program will be invited to participate in the day-long Booking Fair in August in Raleigh. The Fair offers an opportunity to meet and talk with the volunteers and staff members who book programs for their schools, communities and organizations. All eligible artists may rent a booth at the Fair. Only artists who participate in the current AIS Program are eligible to showcase at the Booking Fair.
