When the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County began planning its first Arts Integration Institute for the summer of 2006, the idea behind it was simple:
There are more effective ways to learn than rote memorization. Teaching that integrates the arts provides a rich educational environment for all students.
Based on a model program created in 2004 by Mimi Herman and hosted at Meredith College, the Institute was designed to give teachers a hands-on opportunity to learn techniques that would invigorate classrooms and to work with some of the finest teaching artists in North Carolina and throughout the United States.
In the first year, the Institute was held at the North Carolina Museum of Art, where the environment was inspirational for participants and the days were infused with and surrounded by amazing visual art.
In the second year, the Institute expanded to two tracks – an Immersion Track for schools that had not sent a team the first year and an Advanced Track for schools that had sent a team to the first year of the Institute. The Institute moved to the Moore Square Museums Magnet Middle School, located in downtown Raleigh.

The 2008 Institute will echo the two-track structure from 2007, and it will be held at the North Carolina Museum of History, and many workshops will be connected to some of the Museum’s exhibits.
Currently, the Institute is open to elementary schools in the following North Carolina counties: Alamance, Burke, Caswell, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Moore, Nash, Orange, Vance, Warren, and Wake. Others will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please call 919-839-1498 x230 for consideration.
